gon River and railroad access helped populate this wilderness which saw a boom during west Michigan’s lumbering era. During the Civil War, Mecosta County residents offered refuge for those people using the “underground railroad” which traversed through the county.
Today, Mecosta County is a hub for recreation and education. Ferris State University, located in the county seat of Big Rapids has one of the top pharmacy schools in the country. With almost 10,000 college students in this rural community, Big Rapids has also earned the reputation as “tubing capital” of Michigan.
